Room 102 – don’t call yourself an expert

Hi, George Swift here from Bigger Brighter Bolder. Today, something slightly different - Room 102.

Not to be confused with Room 101, however, showing certain similarities. This is where I stick all of the stuff that I hate - or dislike, hate might be a strong word - that I dislike about entrepreneurism, small businesses, businesses as a whole, and, hell, maybe I'll stick some other stuff in there as well.

Today, I want to start with just one, right? And tell me if you agree with me or not.

What I want to put into Room 102, into the depths of the bowels of Room 102, where never to be seen again, and hopefully never to be experienced again is...

Experts who call themselves an expert.

Tell me if you agree with me, or if you disagree with me. I don't like it.

Do I do it occasionally? I do, and I catch myself, and I give myself a good spanking for it, right?

Every now and again, I might sit here and say, "This is what I'm an expert in." And I catch myself and I'm like, "Aargh!." Cringe, right?

So what I mean by this is this. I believe you can only be an expert in the eyes of the beholder. You can't be a self-proclaimed expert. You can be good at what you do, you might feel like you're an expert at something. But I really have a problem with people that say, "I'm an expert in this." I don't know why…

Am I right, am I wrong? How do you feel about it?

I won't put it into Room 102 unless you agree with me. If you agree with me, or the majority of you agree with me - let's be honest, if 51% of you agree with me - I'm going to stick it into Room 102. If not, I will concede, and I will allow this to continue to exist in the world around us.

But for me, it's the coach, the mentor, the expert-led business, I don't know, it's anyone really for me that turns around and says, "I'm an expert."

As soon as I hear them say, "I'm an expert." I'm like, "You shouldn't have to tell me that." You should be demonstrating that you're an expert. Other people should be saying that you're an expert. All of that's fine, right?

YOU should not be saying that you're an expert. It's one of my absolute hates.

And I have done it - I'm not going to lie - I have done it, and I punish myself and I want to banish that part of me to Room 102 as well. However, it will only go to Room 102 if you agree with me.

If you disagree with me, reluctantly, I will let it live in the external world some more.

Get in the comments, let me know. Do you agree? Does it wind you up? Or do you think it's perfectly acceptable to sing your own praises like that?

That’s not the same as saying you can't say you're good at something, or, you know, "This is what we specialize in..." I'm not saying that. It's very specifically, "I'm an expert in…" Right? That's the bit I’ve got a problem with. "I'm an expert in…”

So if you think it is acceptable, tell me why I'm wrong. Stick it in the box. I'll concede. It might just be me, right? I might be just a grumpy, moany old man.

So let me know. Am I right? Am I wrong? I will go with the majority rule and I'll get back to you, and then I'll let you know whether I won, or whether maybe, maybe you might win. If you disagree with me.

Right! Let me know. Does it go to Room 102 or not - people who refer to themselves as experts, either when it's spoken word, face-to-face, on their websites or wherever it might be?

Do you agree with me? Do you disagree with me? Let me know.
