There is way more you ‘could do’ than you actually can do. For this reason, the busy and ambitious business owner must develop the ability to say ‘NO’. If you don’t stick your goals and your agenda, you’ll easily get pulled onto someone else’s or give in to distraction.
You need a cast iron NO before you can have a strong YES.
If you say yes to everything, you’re not actually saying yes to anything. To have a strong and absolute yes, you must first be able to say no. If you can’t say no, you’re not really saying yes, you’re just not saying no. It’s only when you possess the power to say an absolute NO to something that you’re empowered to give a definitive YES.
If you’re a people-pleaser like me, this is a nightmare because saying no to someone can leave you worrying you’ll be judged, disliked or rejected. It’s true, saying yes to every request often does make people like you, so saying no for a people pleaser is painful. Everyone needs a solid NO in their arsenal.
Saying yes when you don’t really mean yes actually leads to resentment and the feeling that you’re being put upon. Saying yes when you haven’t got the time or will to follow through inevitably leads to you letting others down. People pleasers, listen up, you’re not pleasing anyone - not others, and certainly not yourself. Saying yes to things not on your agenda pulls you away and onto someone else’s agenda. You must have a strong NO in you so that when you say yes, you really mean yes.
