Here are my top tips for your first hire:
👉 Hire with a view to taking them on the journey with you. Bring someone in to part of the overall plan of what you’re looking to achieve and the impact you want to have on your clients.
👉 Spend time working out what someone could take off you in the first instance. How could they free you up to focus on the activities that have the biggest impact – like sales.
👉 Hire based on attitude first – everything else can be taught.
👉 Get professional help. Recruitment can be expensive but nowhere near as expansive as getting it wrong. Use someone who specialises in first hires, like Jayne Johnson at Better People.
👉 Have a robust onboarding plan for the first two weeks. It’s super daunting starting a new role and it’s important to make sure they feel welcome and are clear on what’s required. Spend lots of time with them.
