Tips for Staying on Track

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'll know that the last 12 months have been pretty tough. They've really taken their toll on us as business owners. And, if you're anything like me, it hasn't been a kind of obvious moment - it's been a series of little moments, and it's kind of crept up on me over a long period of time.  

Twelve months is a long period of time. You know you've been working harder, you know you've been feeling more fear and stress and anxiety. And it's been chipping away, inadvertently, it's just been chipping away, chip, chip, chip, chipping away at your soul. That's what it feels like.  

Today I want to say that there is absolutely no shame whatsoever if you are feeling depressed, fearful, anxious, worried. There is absolutely no shame in you feeling any of those things. I'm having lots of conversations at the moment with business owners who are just fraught. And I understand it - we really underestimate what we've been through, and how, like I said, it just chips away. And we find ourselves in a position where we're fraught, and we start beating ourselves up for feeling that way.  

It is absolutely okay for you to feel the way you're feeling right now. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, or you're feeling depressed, or you're feeling stressed, you need to know that you are not alone.  

So I put together some little top tips to keep you on track, because that's what we want to do. What we don't want to do is lose sight of what we set out to achieve last year, this year, what our goals are, what our dreams are - we need to stay on track for those.  

I've put together some top tips to try and keep you stay on track whilst you're going through what you're going through.  

 

Tips for Staying on Track

 

Tip # 1 - Reach out and tell someone.  

However, be discerning about who you reach out to. Now you need to think about what it is that you want at this time. For some people, when they're in this space, they want a giant kick up the arse. For others, what they want is a little bit of tea and sympathy. It might be something in between. You might just want a friendly ear, you might want somebody who can give you some sound advice. Think about what it is that you want, and then think about who the best person is to get that from before you rush out and tell somebody exactly how you're feeling right now. You're going to be vulnerable at the moment, so make sure that you do the work to think about what it is that you want before you go rushing out to find the right person.  

Tip # 2 - Do some writing.  

Now I'm a big fan of journaling. I've mentioned it 1000 times before, sorry I'm just checking my notes to keep me on track. I'm a big fan of writing, of journaling. What happens when you put stuff down on paper is it slows the subconscious brain - it slows everything down. And it enables you to get a little bit of clarity, a little bit of insight into what's really going on. And most importantly, a little bit of perspective, which is quite often what is needed in these situations is a little bit of perspective. So I urge you to take pen and paper and start doing some writing.  

Tip # 3 – Prioritise 

The other thing that you really need to do is prioritise. Now, when I say prioritise, you need to really think about how you're prioritising. When you're in this place, your number one priority is you. There is nothing more important in your life than you. So, number one, the priority has to be you. After that, you need to think about the priorities that are important for moving you forward with the life that you fundamentally want to lead. Not the life that someone else wants you to lead. Not the life that society expects you to lead. The life that you fundamentally want to lead.  

Tip # 4 - Create some space.  

Book some time out. I had a conversation with somebody recently, they were overwhelmed. They gave themselves 48 hours, so 48 hours of just doing nothing, just taking themselves out, just doing a bit of planning, a bit of creativity, a bit of headspace, to really reenergize the body. I understand it's not always possible with kids and various different challenges, but look at your diary and look at creating space, and create big chunks of space for you to get to rest, to have some downtime. This can feel really counter-productive when you're busy, but trust me, you're going to be way more productive with the time that you have if you create a little bit of space in your diary so please do do that.  

Tip # 5 - Get outside.  

This is not something that is just saved for the fluffies, right? There is a lot of science around the impact that nature has on our systems. Get your arse outside, get outside, go and surround yourself with some greenery. Take your shoes and socks off and get your feet in the soil. Really spend some time in our beautiful outdoors. It's so important to settle our whole systems, and we get energy from nature. So really make an effort to go and spend some time outside and don't underestimate the healing power of being in nature.  

Tip # 6 - Remember how important you are.  

I've mentioned it before. There is no one more important in your life than you. And you have to really remember how important you are in your own hero's journey, right? This is your hero's journey. You are fundamentally important to this. So do a bit of pampering, do a bit of something for you, something you love. Really take some time out and honour just what an incredible human being you are. All of this will go into creating, hopefully, a little bit of a shift for you. And hopefully, if we can just move it a notch, we'll have definitely made progress.
