So, last week we had a bit of a disaster. We were due to run a workshop, had lots of lovely people booked on, and well….
…. to cut a long story short, we had a series of events in the run up, including…
• a near breakdown under a lot of pressure
• technology failing on us on the day
• finding out our daughter was in a car accident 10 minutes before (she’s fine)
• general communication breakdowns
The outcome, I made the decision to pull the workshop at the last minute and called attendees in to let them know it was cancelled at the time we should be running it.
A very frazzled George came onto the workshop without realising the webinar had gone live and the attendees were present, and was shouting and swearing….. a lot of swearing….
So, a number of things from this event:
1. I stand by the decision to protect George and cancel, even though it was last minute. Some things are more important.
2. We are human just like everyone else and sometimes shit goes wrong and you accidentally make that public.
3. Obviously we died a bit on the inside at the time, but despite that we handled it professionally and offered to send people free copies of our book to make amends.
4. The team were amazing and rallied to address the issue quickly.
5. We have never cancelled a scheduled workshop in 14 years of delivery, I think we’re allowed one.
6. George isn’t quite there yet with seeing the funny side, but he’s working on it. 😊
But the biggest thing of all….
I was bracing myself for the complaints.
I didn’t have one complaint.
Instead I had messages of support from people I have never met, as well as some that I knew. They came in thick and fast and to be honest brought me to tears. The level of compassion and the degree to which people saw beyond shouting and swearing to the suffering of another human being…. I was totally blown away by the humanity and I shall never forget that day.
