01 Jul [Episode 01] Levelling Up: extreme business growth
Welcome to the Levelling Up podcast.
In this first ever episode, Levelling Up: extreme business growth, I introduce the intentions and mission of this podcast and the concept of levelling up as a business owner.
I’m on a mission to help small business owners achieve the success and lifestyles they deserve.
This podcast gives you the personal development, entrepreneurial development and the business growth that you, an ambitious entrepreneur, need in order to take you and your business to the next level.
Levelling Up: extreme business growth through raising your game
In this article, I’m going to lay out exactly what it is I mean by levelling up; why you, the business owner, need to level up.
Extreme business growth requires both you and your business to evolve. My aim is to challenge your thinking and inspire greater levels of motivation whilst also getting you to start thinking bigger, to challenge your current ambition and to get you to dream bigger, to raise your expectations, to really level up your game and take control of your life as an entrepreneur so that you can take yourself and your business to the next level. This and following articles are a means for me to pass on the content that is usually reserved for our Success Groups and Extreme Growth Masterminds. It’s a really good opportunity for me to take that content and bring it out of the closed rooms of those groups and give it to the wider population. I’m absolutely on a mission here to help small business owners just like you to achieve greater levels of success.
In the years that we’ve been running Success Groups, and the years I’ve been working with entrepreneurs, it’s always broken my heart to see so many business owners struggling to achieve their potential. There’s a degree of challenge that’s always going to come from being a business owner – let alone from being a human being – but when you start really wanting to push yourself and your business to perform at higher levels, to create a better quality of life for yourself, it can be a challenging journey and that’s why I’m here to share that journey with you.
You need to keep growing. First and foremost, if you’re not growing, the chances are that you are decaying. At the very least you’re stagnating or maybe plateauing. If you want to continue to get the rewards out of your business that you deserve, you need to keep pushing the business further forward, and to do that you need to keep levelling yourself up. You need to continually develop yourself as a business owner. We have a saying at Success Groups – Your business is your business, but you’re our business. In other words, your job is to take care of your business. Your job is to grow your business. However, my job here is to help you become the best performing business owner you can be and a big part of that is helping you to become the best performing human being you can be.
You cannot separate you the person from you the entrepreneur and business owner, from your business, who you are and who you’re being – the actions you take, your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, will all amount to creating a degree of success or failure that you will experience in life and that your business will experience. I see way too many business owners struggling unnecessarily. So, if you’re reading this, welcome aboard the BBB train and let’s get you some really good business growth. Let us hold your hand through some of the things that you need to navigate in order to make that happen.
The number one thing is simple. It’s called levelling up because you will need to level up. If you need or want to grow your business in a small way there’s not a lot you need to change. You can just work a little bit harder, a little bit more efficiently. However, if you want to take your business through a big evolution you’re going to have to take yourself through that process first and foremost – you are leading the way. If you don’t continually level up as an entrepreneur, you will eventually, inevitably, hit your own limitations based on your own past performance.
Your business has its own challenges and you’re going to have to continually level up the business itself. It will need to evolve. It will need continuous growth. However, what you don’t want is for you to become the limiting factor in that progression. You want to take you out of the equation. You’re laying the track for the train that is your business growth ahead of where your business currently is. If you don’t do that the track will run out. You will have to slow down and stop. You’ll be forced to confront what might be inner issues, doubts and fears and have to deal with overcoming those challenges before you can restart the train, laying new track as you go. In other words, you’ll lose all of your momentum.
When you want to grow your business fast – and we’ve got many years’ experience of doing this, both with our own business, and of course, with our members and clients – you need to maintain the momentum that you’ve created while growing your business. That’s why you need to keep levelling up ahead of your business. You do not want to be the weakest link in the performance of your business. You are your greatest asset but also the biggest liability to your business. You want to limit that liability so you can work on your business efficiently, effectively, productively, and can wring from it the absolute last of the potential that it has to offer.
Levelling up is about resolving your inner issues but also about taking on those external challenges. As this series of articles unfolds, you’ll start to see lots of content around such issues as challenging your pricing, your pricing strategy, your structures, the modelling that you’re running through your business. I’m also going to be interviewing some really high calibre business owners who have gone on the journey that you are currently on, sharing their experiences both with myself, but also with you.
Now, here’s the thing. Stepping up can be very challenging. Maybe you’re doing okay in your business. I don’t know where you are – maybe 50 or 60K, and you’re okay with that. It provides a basic lifestyle. Maybe you’re doing 100 or 200K and you’re starting to get a half decent lifestyle. Maybe you’re doing more than that. Wherever you’re at, I want to take you to the next level.
As you start to grow and face challenges – if you dare to take the challenge of extreme business growth – you will inevitably find it uncomfortable. What I mean is that there will be a degree of resistance in you. There may also be a degree of inertia in your business and those two things together will need overcoming. Achieving that may well require some education – there will be things you need to do better. There’s information you need to know about in order to face the challenge intelligently. Sometimes it’s going to need a little bit of brute force – you may just need to work a little bit harder or faster. You may need to dig in and grind it out for a while in order to take yourself to the next level and beyond.
Of course, your business journey is up to you. This is aimed at those business owners who are absolutely committed to growing their business. Therefore, some of what I say moving forward may be deemed challenging – it may be uncomfortable. However, if you are absolutely committed to your own journey of extreme growth, you need to hear what I’ve got to say.
As I said at the beginning, When the extraordinary becomes ordinary you know you've levelled up. Click To Tweet
Where are you right now? Let’s say we look at doubling it.
This is a challenge that I often set for the business owners within Success Groups, Success Groups Plus, Masterminds and our Extreme Growth Mastermind. People in there have doubled, quadrupled and more. We’ve got people that have gone from 2K to over 25K per month in revenue. Extreme growth in business is absolutely attainable. Wherever you are right now, the minimum you should be aiming for in the next 12 months is to double your turnover.
If you’ve taken five years to get to 50K in your business and I’m suggesting that in the next 12 months I want you to take your business to 100K, that will sound really challenging. It may confront what you believe to be plausible or achievable. Then, once you start to achieve it – when you dare to challenge yourself to start doing what you need to do in order to achieve that kind of extreme growth – it will seem extraordinary. What it is that you’re chasing may feel unbelievable. However, if you’re trusting us on this particular journey and daring to roll up your sleeves, dig in, and really go for it, something wonderful starts to happen. It starts to feel normal.
Eventually, you’ll double your 50K to hit your 100K, or you’ll go from 20 to 40K, or from 75 to 150K. We’ve had businesses go from a quarter of a million to half a million a year. In fact, one of our Mastermind members went from one million to two million pounds in turnover recently in well under six months.
To achieve these results, you have to take a deep breath, dig in, and really challenge yourself to go for this extreme growth – even if you don’t feel certain that it’s achievable. When you fight hard enough for long enough you will hit that extraordinary goal and it will feel exciting. The dream becomes a reality, but it still feels special. You’ll still walk around pinching yourself for a while.
Whilst you’re still in that pinching yourself phase you haven’t yet fully levelled up, even though you’ve achieved the result. The levelling up part of the process occurs when doing 100K in revenue feels as normal as doing 50K does today. Or doing a million pounds feels as ordinary or mundane as half a million pounds did before.
No matter where you are in your business, assuming you’ve been in it for a while you are already achieving a result that you weren’t achieving a year or two ago. I’m making a presumption here that your business is growing. I hope it is. There may have been a point where you didn’t believe you could ever work for yourself. Maybe you were tied up in a corporate job and one day, for whatever reason, you took the plunge. No more getting up at seven o’clock on a Monday! And then, gradually, it started to feel normal. It might have taken months, or maybe a year, but at some point it feels like the most normal thing in the world that you are a business owner, doing what it is that you love doing and master of your own destiny.
This is a levelling up – a new baseline of what is normal. And from there, of course, you can start to work towards the next level. I want you to think about a mountain climber who, as they climb, fastens themselves to the mountain at each stage of their ascent and in doing so ensures that if they fall, they will only fall as far as the last point of safety. Each stage becomes the new base level.
Each time you level up your default for what your expectations are or what is ordinary for you changes. However, if what is normal is unemployed, broke or bankrupt, there is the potential that you can fall back to that normal. When your normal is 50K a year, or when your normal is 100K or a million or 100 million, these start to become your default norms. You might fail at what it is you’re currently facing. However, you will very quickly regroup back to what you consider to be ordinary, the baseline of what you consider to be normal. That’s why it’s so important that we continue to level up because the levelling up process is about constantly raising that bar of what is considered normal by you. What we’re really talking about here is in your unconscious which is where these levels are set. Therefore, it’s so important that you continue to level yourself up personally.
Over and over again I’ve had to massively level up. Where I am in my life now – what I do for a living, the lifestyle that I currently have – is so far beyond what I grew up with. It’s so far beyond what I expected for myself or could dream of. And yet I’ve been living it for many years now. My life continues to improve. My business is constantly growing and improving. What I have today now feels as normal as what I had 20 years ago when I had very little. And now, I want to take you on this journey of levelling up.
Hopefully, you’re starting to understand why it’s so important to level up. I want you to think about where the blocks and barriers are that are stopping you from daring to be truly ambitious in your business. And I want you to think about what doubling your business would look like. Would you change your premises? Would your products change? Would your lifestyle change? And what does extreme business growth look like for you?
I want you to start with the idea of doubling your business in the next 12 months. I’ve done it with so many of my clients and I want this for you.
Maybe you’re not yet running a business and maybe I can be the inspiration for you to get started. Your really big, extreme goal may be getting out of the nine-to-five rat race to do something that really matters to you, something you can be passionate about and love. Whatever that extreme growth goal is, levelling up is about getting to a place where you not only achieve that but where that becomes as normal as what it is that you are currently achieving.
I want you to challenge yourself to dare to think bigger – dream bigger. I challenge you to really look at what it’s going to take to get you and your business to that next level.
